Get the Most Out of Your Fitness Routine

Hello Octane Fitness Fam,

Steve Lynch here with some critical tips to help you get the most out of your fitness routine. Many people who get started on a workout program have high hopes to set reasonable goals and have a solid plan to acheive them. So then the question is why do so many people fall short and why do so many people who start to get results end up worst off then before they began? And an important follow up question should then be “how can I avoid this pitfall”? Let me give you 3 tips that will provide you confidence in the process and guarantee results.

1) Seek professional advice: Let me explain it this way. Let’s say you never golfed before in your life and you decided you were going to start to hit the range and work on your swing. So you proceed to invest time and money in learning to do things improperly and cause more harm then good. Now let’s say you could spend just 3-6 months with a golf professional to walk you through all of he nuances of the golf swing, critique your motion, and build good habits so that you can now go out on your own and have effective practice and consistently get better and better with your game. There is an investment up front to do this but it will lead to better results, reduce frustration, and actually save you time and money in the long run. Advice from a top notch fitness professional will do the same for your quest for fitness.

2) Commit to change: Let’s face it, if you were where you wanted to be you wouldn’t have to change your current lifestyle. The fact of the matter is we can all improve and should strive to improve on a daily basis. The problem is people are insane! Before you think I have gone off the deep end with my comment let me define insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Sound familiar? If so you are halfway there. You have just identified that you have been trying to enact change with tactics that have proven themselves out to not only be ineffective but are in fact detrimental. The shifting of one’s mindset to allow change to take place in their lives is difficult to do but is paramount for success. Be patient with yourself but do not accept failure.

3) Treat your workouts as unbreakable business appointments: Working with thousands of people through the years I get to see trends that take place with gym habits. One of these habits is people do not put a top priority on their scheduled workout times. It seems that anything that pops up warrants a higher priority than their workout. Now don’t mistake what I am saying, emergencies do come up and life does happen. Change your thought process from your gym time being something you “fit in when you can” too “I will get fired if I don’t show up for work”. This shift in mentality can mean the difference between you having one of your best workouts yet to being depressed about skipping yet another workout.

I hope you have found these tips helpful. Please leave topics you would like me to discuss/address in the comment box and I will do my best to answer them for you.
